San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Declares Second Unusual Event Due to
Mexico Border Earthquakes




SAN ONOFRE, Calif., Aug. 26, 2012 – San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) has declared a second Notice of Unusual Event, in compliance with regulations, at 2:03 p.m. after another earthquake was felt in the control room. There was no threat to the public or employees and no one was hurt.

The station has received reports of earthquakes near the Mexico border.

The plant has been off-line since earlier this year, and there is no safety risk for the public or SONGS employees.

This second declaration follows the protocols set by of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission which also includes notification of state and community partners. All notifications have been made.

The San Onofre plant is jointly owned by SCE (78.21%), San Diego Gas & Electric (20%), and the city of Riverside (1.79%).

UPDATE 7:34 PM Eastern: Jennifer Manfre of SCE informs APR directly that San Onofre was in the process of clearing the first Notification of Unusual Event when the second earthquake was felt in the control room, moving the plant directly into a second NOUE. This means that there is only a single clearance of NOUE notification to expect.
