Large plume of smoke at Fukushima Daiichi plant. Source unknown.
9:00 PM Tuesday Eastern.
UPDATE: Smoke from No. 4 reactor plant. 9:06 PM. (SEE BELOW)
UPDATE: Wind is directly onshore, although velocity not high, at the site. 9:16 PM.
This is likely to be very serious in terms of release of contamination if this is involving the spent fuel, although it's difficult to imagine how this is possible. One expert has said that there must be flammables in and around the area on the refueling floor.
UPDATE: Now the report from the N&ISA is that the smoke is from No. 3 plant. The time of this update is 9:40 local (Eastern US) and the time stamp on the report with this information is only eight minutes old.
